Author IndexQuotations from the Wayside
The quotations in this collection are reprinted as they originally appeared in the Wayside Community Pulpit and may contain language considered sexist or archaic by today’s standards. To preserve history as it was written, I have left them as they are. But I offer the following tips developed by Rosalie Maggio, compiler of The Beacon Book of Quotations, to make the quotes more inclusive for your use.
- Use quotation marks for part of the quotation that does not contain sexist or archaic language, and rewrite the rest.
- Use brackets or ellipses to omit sexist or archaic material.
- Use “[sic]” to indicate the material was sexist in the original and draw your reader’s attention to the inaccuracy.
- When a quotation is tightly woven with sexist words, credit the writer for the idea, omitting the quotation marks and rephrasing the words.
Every effort has been made to properly credit the quotations in this book. Errors made in the past, however, are sometimes carried into the future. If you have corrections, please write to Skinner House Books, 25 Beacon Street, Boston, Massachusetts 02108-2800.
