The call to worship in this service is an invitation to which the congregation responds by standing and joining in the hymn. The chalice lighting text, read in unison by the congregation, functions as a statement of aspiration and commitment. Notice how the basic themes of the invitation are taken up again by the congregation in its unison reading.
This service is structured so that children may attend the opening part of the service with their families. The call to worship and chalice lighting words are addressed not only to adults, but to a fully intergenerational congregation. A special story for children follows before the children are dismissed to their religious education activities by a congregational song.
