This service begins with two distinctive acts. (See Common Worship: How and Why for more on understanding worship in dramatic terms.) In the first act, the musical prelude gathers the community for worship, and the welcome and announcements invite newcomers and long-time members to consider the many opportunities for fellowship in the congregation.
A second act begins with the opening hymn and continues through a series of unison readings. The hymn, the unison chalice lighting words, and the unison affirmation essentially express the aspirations and ideals of the congregation. Some congregations will use the same chalice lighting words or affirmation week after week, while other congregations will use a variety of texts. The mood, however, is celebratory: the congregation rejoices to be together.

Be kindled again in our hearts
As we meet together this morning
To celebrate the joy of human community
Seeking a wholeness that extends beyond ourselves.

This is our great covenant:
To dwell together in peace,
To seek the truth in love,
And to help one another. Amen.
