Chalice Lighting  -  Andrew C. Backus

Throughout the ages, light --
     whether from a single candle
         or from a blazing, primordial fire --
     has summoned within human minds
         the vision of that in us
             which is ultimate and eternal.

As we light our chalice this morning,
     we rekindle the spirit of living meaning.

We celebrate by the warmth of its fire
     the depth and breadth of our religious communion.

We celebrate by the light of its fire
     the faith we share.
