What are we called to do? What does effective UU urban church ministry look
like?

About the Workshop:
Take a close look at the ministry of the seven urban churches of Chicago, bring your
own stories to add to theirs. What are the ingredients of effective urban ministry from a
UU perspective? How might we develop a mission and structure for our own individual
churches in their settings that will effectively express and meet the needs and dreams of
our communities? A presentation will focus on the stories of the seven congregations of
Chicago, noting common characteristics and uniquities, with some conclusions. This will
also be a time to share stories and begin a discussion of issues that are common to
participants' experience.
Workshop leader biographies:
Margaret Shaklee has been involved in Unitarian Universalism for fifteen years. She
has designed and conducted leadership development workshops which bring together into
collaboration the church leadership of the greater Chicago UU church community. Topic
areas include strategic planning, membership development, public relations, and
organization for growth. She has served on the Chicago Area UU Council (CAUUC) for five
years and served as president for two. CAUUC has long supported the interchurch
organizations of the greater Chicago area, including the UUs for Social Justice (UUSJ),
the Chicago chapter of the UUs for a Just Economic Community (UUJEC), and the recently
developed UU Urban Church Coalition of Chicago (U3C2).
