Third Unitarian and Its Neighborhood
Workshop leaders:
Michelle Bentley & Stan Williams
About the Workshop:
TUC's heightened self-awareness/commitment to anti-racism programs and interactive
Social action within our inner-city community was embodied by our call to UUA's senior
African American woman minister in June 1998. Soon after arrival, Rev. Bentley convened
leaders from local Austin community associations including TUC, 300 Mason Block clubb,
Mother's House (shelter for battered women and hcildren), THE PCC Community Wellness
Center, and the 15th Police District (Commander). This group agreed to collectively
address the quality of life for people living in nine square blocks surrounding TUC, (We
adopted the initials of 3 local streets: 3M Austin Action Committee--Mason, Mayfield,
Menard Streets). We have shut down crack house, and impacted the drug sales, etc. We would
have the executives of each program relate and show programs, etc. We also are working
with 3/4 other suburban UUA congregations on our neighborhood and issues.
