Building an Urban Outreach Ministry

Workshop leaders:
Rev. Ken Brown and Rev. Sherri Puchalsky

About the Workshop:
The workshop will describe the creation and evolution of the Unitarian Universalist Urban Ministry of Los Angeles. This urban outreach ministry was created as part of the response to the riots in Los Angeles in 1992. The founding board had members from six different UU congregations. The programs have ranged from a food pantry and an urban farmers market to ESL classes and tutoring for neighborhood children. This model of a regional ministry that connects us to our communities is one of the possibilities for helping to sustain urban ministry in UU congregations.

Workshop leader biographies:
Rev. Ken Brown is currently District Executive of the Pacific Southwest District. A UU minister for 26 years, he was the founder of the UU Urban Ministry of Los Angeles serving as its first Board chair. He was also the consulting minster at First Unitarian Church of Los Ageles from 1994-1996. He has also been chair of the UU Urban Church Coalition in the 1980's and again in the 1990's.

Rev. Sherri Puchalsky is minister of First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles since 1998 and in that capacity she works with the UU Urban Ministry. Sherri is also involved with a number of community projects of the First Unitarian Church.
