Soul Work
Anti-racist Theologies in Dialogue
Marjorie Bowens-Wheatley and Nancy Palmer Jones, Editors
"There has been considerable resistance
to seeing racism as a profound problem for Christianity."
- James Cone
"Will there ever be a time when
we can authentically be who we are, believe what we believe,
speak our own truth, sing our own song-and be with one another?"
-Rosemary Bray McNatt
"Transformation requires understanding
that comes from the very center of our being-that place that
sees and knows no difference between people across social
boundaries." -Patricia Jimenez
"I want to do the right thing.
My world is opening." -Gary E. Smith
"Our task is either to imagine
the future of this world into existence together or to let
it be imagined for us." -George Tinker
"Liberals want to create a strong
and inclusive community, but we often want to do it without
giving up anything, without letting down the barriers we erect
around ourselves in the name of individual autonomy."
- Paul Rasor
"We must go back to basics. Racial
abuse is homegrown." - Thandeka
"Clearly racial oppression has
not died but has simply mutated." -William R. Jones
"A person of faith, seeking out
of love and desire for life to inhabit his or her country,
needs to be engaged in incarnational social action. Activism
returns one to the actual world as a participatory citizen
and an agent of history." -Rebecca Parker
In
January 2001, the UUA convened a three-day consultation on
theology and racism. Approximately 30 scholars, ministers,
theologians, seminarians, teachers and activists participated.
The resulting 9 papers -and dialogue that followed -address
the complex and pressing issues of racism. The thoughts and
feelings captured here encourage reconsideration of our long-held
beliefs. A resource presenting many points of view, Soul Work
can be used for individual reflection and study, for book
discussion groups or adult education classes, for church leadership
discussions or minister's retreats, for Sunday programs, and
to create or supplement anti-racism workshops. Each paper
is followed by a transcript of the resulting responses, a
summary of the major points and questions for personal or
group reflection.Buy
