By Caryl Stern-LaRosa and Ellen Hofheimer Bettmann (Scholastic Books, 2000) This book, a project of the Anti-Defamation League, is a guide for adults and children on confronting and conquering bias and encouraging appreciation fof our differences. This wonderful guide, for any person responsible for children of any age, offers practical tips, sound advice, and role-playing for difficult situations. Researched and written by Anti-Defamation League experts, Hate Hurts is an essential tool to help adults teach children not to hate. "Part One" of the book explores understanding hate and where it comes from. It begins with an overview, from birth to teens, of how children learn about hate; then it offers an exploration of some of the things that make people different from one another (gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, culture and ethnicity, and ability). It discusses why people hate, and what can we do about hate. "Part Two" offers questions about hate and responses to hate, including age specific questions and answers, name-calling, joking, and excluding. "Part Three" covers challenging hate outside the home and making a commitment to change.
