Inherent Worth and Dignity of All People
Journey to Community: A Transformational, Experiential, Diverse Model for Adult Education

At the heart of all our Unitarian Universalist Principles is the inherent worth and dignity of every person. It is there in our pursuit of justice, personal growth, world community, right of conscience, search for truth and meaning, and respect for the interdependent web of all existence. The Journey to Community program was developed to give participants an experience of this birthright for all people.

Journey to Community is a model for creating a diversity learning experience for adults that is transformational rather than educational. The program is experiential in nature and is composed of the following components: information and dialogue opportunities, cultural or social immersion experience, opportunities for social justice work, and personal reflection. The model honors shared leadership. This experience has a profound impact on participants' lives. A Journey could be as short as one focus over a specific period or a longer commitment.

This resource gives examples of Journey programs that explore abelism, ageism, and classism, as well as Native American, African American, Asian American, and East European life experiences. The program encourages participants to get to know their neighbors. It includes ideas for designing your own Journey program. It gives many practical suggestions for initiating a Journey program in your congregation or community. (80 pages, $20)

From Africa to America and Onward: An African American Musical History
This is an intergenerational service that weaves the history, music, and dance of African Americans with Unitarian Universalist history. Interwoven components include children or adults singing African American folk music to rap, a dancer performing dances from African rhythms to hip-hop; and a narrator. Unitarian Universalists included in this service are Bernice Johnson Reagon, Benjamin Rush (UCC), Fanny Kemble, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Theodore Parker, Joseph Jordan, Annie Willis, Viola Liuzzo, James Reeb, John Hayes Homes, and Whitney Young, Jr. (12 pages, $10)

LIVING THE EIGHTH UU PRINCIPLE:
We affirm and promote the joy and beauty of living given to us through
our bodies, hearts and spirits.

The Senses: Our Access to the Living Earth (a six-week curriculum for all ages)
This six-week curriculum was very popular with children of all ages (preschool through 6th grade). Each week is devoted to an exploration of one of our major five senses. It includes ideas for creating a weekly sensorium, a room that floods the children with the experience of that particular sense. The resource contains scores of sensing activity ideas; poems that evoke each sense; ideas for creating four sensoriums, a detailed teacher training, a sample course description for parents, Sunday program announcement and children's worship. Permission is granted to reproduce the six weekly sense sessions for teacher use. (68 pages, $25)
