Boys on Bullying

With Discussion Guide by Jeanne Blake
Produced by Family Health Productions

The Power of Girls: Inside and Out is a 20-minute video that profiles five young women who talk about some of the challenges they faced growing up and how support from their family, community, and friends helped them. Rachel narrates the program. Katti describes what it was like to be rejected and teased by friends. Bopha grew up wanting to be perfect and talks about her obsession with losing weight. Wendy's story is about the responsibilities of becoming a woman and handling sexual feelings. Kemba talks about her mother's struggle with breast cancer and how she was able to cope with her death. Through these stories we learn how family, school, and community supported them and helped them maintain their strong sense of self.

Boys on Bullying
is a 20-minute video that examines the struggles five boys faced during their transition to adolescence and how their relationship with family, community, and friends helped them. Ernesto narrates the program. Judd tells about being teased and bullied every day by classmates. Wilson describes himself as the tough guy in a neighborhood where violence was a way of life, but when his best friend was murdered he learned to deal with his emotions in a positive way. Although everyone looked up to Jim, he felt isolated and rejected, but he learned ways to handle his pain and to stay true to himself. Oronde's story is about searching for peer acceptance through violence, drugs, and sex, but with his parents support he was able to turn his life around. With each of these stories we learn the importance of family, school, and community and how these connections helped them maintain their inner strength.
