Each year, the UUA makes grants to local congregations for their R E programs through the Religious Education Department's Office of Professional Development. Although the number of awards and the numbers of dollars are modest, they are intended to help with the expenses of continuing education programs such as summer institutes or course work for religious educators. They were made possible by the generosity of persons who cared deeply about religious education and established funds for its welfare. The Clara Bancroft Beatley Fund is for preparing women to work in religious education and may be used for persons wishing to participate in the Renaissance program or other such training. The Eugene Bowen Fund Provides annual $100 grants to twelve congregations for church/fellowship school use such as purchasing curricula or equipment. The Earle Fund from the Universalist General Sunday School Association provides scholarships of up to $100 each for persons wishing to attend summer institutes. The Josephine T. Gould Scholarship Fund grants up to $150 annually to further the education of persons preparing to become ministers of religious education in UU societies. This grant is limited to persons enrolled in M.A. degree programs for religious education or the Meadville/Lombard Modified Residency program. The Barbara Marshman & Ann Fields Memorial Scholarship Fund is awarded annually to a religious educator engaged in graduate study. This $500 prize is given through the generous contributions of those who wish to memorialize and honor the work of these two great religious educators and through the ongoing financial support of the UUA.. The application deadline is May 1st. Continuing Education Grants The Office of Professional Development has funds available to covenanted religious educators, with priority given to those seeking credentialed status within the UUA. These funds are in support of that part of the congregation's ministry that is religious education. Additional continuing education grants are available for ordained religious educators through the department of ministry. Each of these grants and scholarships has its own requirements and restrictions. For application forms or additional information, contact Michelle Favreault, Director, Office of Professional Development c/o the Religious Education Department, UUA, 25 Beacon St., Boston, MA 02108 or via email at mfavreault@uua.org. We also encourage you to contact your district and local conference sponsoring groups for additional grants and scholarships that may be available to further your work in religious education. |
