GOD IMAGES By Dixie Welch, member, and former DRE of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Bloomington, IN The following game was devised for our fourth and fifth grade class (knowing how this age group loves games and making and testing rules). It was used in conjunction with the weekly lessons and films strip of curriculum (used three times during the semester) to help the children recognize and understand the symbols and images. We tested one version in mid-semester and the attached revised version at the semester's end. The game sheets can be copied onto card stock for sturdy game pieces and ease in handling during play. If particular images or symbols shown were not used in the lessons, others can of course be substituted in the master sheet(s) before reproduction. The game piece sheets are well marked for quick and easy cutting with a paper cutter. It is helpful for play if the game cards are different colors. Each child drawing a piece and matching it with an image or symbol depicted on the game card plays the game. Pieces that don't match a square on the game card are set in the trade column. When a child spots a useful piece on another card's trade column, a trade can be made. The children can and most likely will make these rules without any prompting. That's part of the fun. Options/suggestions Small prizes are given for full game cards. The size of the prize doesn't matter; small stickers and trading cards suffice. Pieces for every square were available: Everyone wins and everyone receives a prize. For purchase of God Images, by Mary Anne Moore, 1986, contact (520) 771-0546) email: jgmoore@primenet.com |
