Annual Christmas Book Wish Tree
Colleen Vojak
Here's an idea for obtaining books for your RE Children's Library. We did it last year, and the results were 45 new books plus a video tape donated by church members.
- Make up a list of books you would like to add to your collection. Get suggestions from RE Teachers and RE Committee Members.
- Make arrangements with a local bookstore to let them know that church members will be coming in to purchase books. Give them a list of the titles/authors in advance so they can check if any of the books are out of print. (These may be taken off the list.) Our local bookstore gave us a 15% discount on all the books and allowed us to purchase them tax exempt. Many bookstores will be happy to make similar arrangments if you tell them it's for a church or school.
- Draw ornaments on paper and xerox onto cardstock. Have children write the name of a book/author on each ornament; cut out and color. Punch a hole in top, string with ribbon so it can be easily hung on a tree.
- Find a church member who's willing to put his or her old fake Christmas tree up in the church lobby or some other highly visible area. Hang the ornaments on the tree.
- Hang up a sign next to the tree telling people the procedure for purchasing the book (which bookstore to go to, etc.). Put a similar explanation in the church bulletin for the next several weeks. Ask people to write a dedication line in the cover of the book, and giftwrap it. Give people a due date.
- The books will pour in. Place them under the tree. Choose a special time to unwrap the books in the congregation's presence. We had the RE Teachers unwrap them during an RE Teacher Appreciation Potluck. They read the title of the book to the congregation and told who donated it.
