Making RE Classes Welcoming for Children with Special Needs
Sally Patton

The purpose of the Religious Education (RE) Learning Differences Project is to provide assistance and information to creatively and compassionately improve UU churches' ability to include children with special needs, primarily those with learning differences, in their RE programs. This will be accomplished by surveying UU Religious Educators as to their needs, publishing a monthly electronic newsletter, and providing two regional workshops. Through learning to include children with learning differences in our Sunday Schools, we will learn new teaching approaches and develop an awareness of the different special needs and learning styles of all our children. As a result, we will be creating a loving and exciting RE program that benefits all children in UU RE programs.

The RE Learning Differences Project is a cooperative effort with the UUA's RE Department. It is partially funded by the UU Funding Program, the Unitarian Sunday School Society, and the UUA's Faith in Action Department, with in-kind services provided by the RE Department. The Winchester Unitarian Society is acting as fiscal agent. Project Coordinator is Sally Patton.

Please look for the Religious Educators survey in this month. First electronic newsletter via the UUA website, which will be based on the survey results, will be published in March.
