Beyond Blame: Challenging Violence in the Media
by Center for Media Literacy
Beyond Blame: Challenging Violence in the Media curriculum is published by the Center for Media Literacy. It
contains a unique collection of practical resources, including outlines for sessions for all age groupings (children, youth,
adults, parents); video segments to analyze and evaluate; copy-ready handouts and worksheets; and many action
ideas to help individuals and families integrate the skills of media literacy in their lives. "These media literacy skills can
help us all reduce the amount of media violence we are exposed to in our homes and communities. Just as important,
they can prepare us to participate actively as citizens in the public discussions that shape policies about media, and
media violence, in our world." (Elizabeth Thoman, Project Director and Editor)
The complete program contains resources to explore 15 themes related to media violence. They are grouped in three ways:
- Basic Questions: At all levels participants develop age appropriate definitions of media violence, learn the "Four Effects of Viewing Media Violence", and more fundamental information.
- Deeper Issues: Older teens and adults explore some of the issues of violence in sports, ads and rock videos. Age-appropriate activities are provided to reduce exposure to violence and to challenge the use of violence
- Action and Advocacy: In all sessions, participants are urged to follow up their learning with action and to challenge the use of violence
