UU Heritage Day
Colleen Vojak
Our RE Program sponsored a UU Heritage Day for the entire church in February, 1998. We had a committee of six church members plus DRE plan the morning's events. This was followed by an all-church RE Teacher Appreciation potluck planned by the RE Committee. We had a record-breaking attendance. Here's how the day looked:
Mini Intergenerational Church Service (40 minutes)
Chalice Lighting -- Hans Deutsch
Prelude -- Old UU hymn
Introduction to "go back in time" -- Rod Serling
Narrator -- Michael Servetus
Special Guests -- John Murray, William Ellery Channing, Abraham Lincoln
Song -- Battle Hymn of the Republic, Julia Ward Howe
More Guests -- Louis May Alcott, Susan B. Anthony, Albert Schweitzer
Song -- All People that On Earth Do Dwell, Pete Seger
Postlude -- New UU Hymn
All of the famous UUs were role-played by church members who dressed the part, and gave very short speeches telling a little about themselves. Note: Lincoln never officially chose a denomination, but he frequented the Universalist church in Urbana when visiting our town.Michael Serveuts took us through a brief UU history, starting with his life to the present.
At the appropriate places in the monologue, the "famous UU guests would come to the front, deliver a short 3-minute speech, and then Servetus would continue his dialogue. We had "Quiet Kits" available filled with coloring sheets and games from "The UU Kid's Book" (with authors' permission). The sanctuary was decorated with posters of famous UUs.
Workshops (50 minutes)
We offered a variety of workshops for children and adults to choose from. Each workshop was planned and led by a committee member.
Beatrix Potter Workshop -- for kids preschool through grade 1
UU Stamp Collecting -- All ages
Who's Who in UU? -- game show which asked questions about famous UUs (all ages)
UU Heritage Discussion -- followup of worship service/how UU has evolved (all ages)
Science and the Church -- used 25 min. UU film followed by discussion (all ages)
The Pilgrims to Priestly -- used 25 min. UU film followed by discussion on why there are not
more UUs (all ages).
RE Teacher Appreciation Potluck
Church members brought dishes to share. We provided the beverages. We had painted flower pots filled with candy and a paper star "wand" with RE Teachers' names. There was one per RE Teacher, and these adorned the tables. We had a microphone set up, and during lunch we read RE jokes that had been collected in advance. On the walls we had about 20 posters with quotes from famous UUs. Church members could guess who had said each quote, and then lift a flap to see if they were correct.
Congregational feedback on this event was overwhelmingly positive, and we were asked to do a similar program again next year!
