Jane Podell, DRE, UU Fellowship of Poughkeepsie, NY This past year, we used Amber Grady's book Unitarian Universalist Minute and it was a big hit. Every time the young folks were in the sanctuary with the big people, a child would do a "UU Minute" (he or she would read info about a famous UU and have the congregation guess who it was). It was a very popular addition to the service and was a way to connect the young with the adults. It also fit into our "UU Identity" theme for the year. My minister asked me if we would be willing to do it again next year since it was so well received by the congregation. Because we are doing "World Religions" next year, I thought perhaps we could do a "World Religions Minute." My minister likes the idea, so I thought I'd share some ideas with you. We begin our year with an intergenerational Water Ceremony Service. I thought I'd use ideas from the most recent "UU&ME" magazine and have a child give clues like: From which river has water been bottled and sold all around the world for millions of Christians to use when they baptize new Christians into their faith? (Answer: the River Jordan) Clue: On top of which river do the Hindu people believe that if you spread the ashes of people who died, those people's spirits could go straight to heaven? (Answer: the Ganges River) There is a wonderful story in this very issue called "The Water Bearer's Garden," that could be the children's story. Another idea for a "World Religions Minute:" play a recording of the Byrds' "Turn, Turn, Turn," and ask the congregation from which famous book did this song come. Please be specific about where in the book it is located. (Answer: Ecclesiastes 3:1-10)
