SECRET PAL
Alice White, DRE
Unitarian Universalist Church, Midland, TX

On the Sunday before Valentine's Day, we asked the children and youth present to fill out a simple questionnaire. The questions included:

  • What is your favorite subject in school and why?
  • When you have free time, what do you do: by yourself? with friends?
  • What's your favorite place to go for a vacation, and what do you like to do when you are there?
  • What's your favorite book? Character in it?
  • What do you think has been your greatest accomplishment?

After the church service, all those willing to participate were invited to a chili lunch (catered by the RE committee). Adults were handed anonymous filled out questionnaires. Before lunch was served, the adults took turns reading questions and answers from the questionnaires they had received. They were encouraged to comment on ways they found themselves and their Secret Pal similar or different, based on those answers. Then they were encouraged to guess who they had. If they had no clue, or were wrong in their guessing, other adults were encouraged to help. After each Secret Pal was identified, they moved to sit at a table with their adult. When all the guessing was done, lunch was served and the Pals remained at the same tables to have a chance to talk and get to know each other.

Next year we plan to do this activity again. There will be a few minor changes, such as new questions and inviting everyone to stay even if they won't have a young person matched with them. All the adults enjoyed hearing a bit about our young people.
