Why Did it Happen?
Helping Children Cope in a Violent World
by Janice Coin, D.S.W., illustrated by Gail Owens
Today children are bombarded by images of violence in the media and encounter its existence in their schools, their local neighborhoods, and sometimes even in their own families. In the aftermath of the Gulf War or in the wake of the violence of Oklahoma City, children ask Why... Why did it happen?
This is the question Daniel asks his parents when they find out their neighborhood grocery store is robbed and Mr. James, the owner and their friend, is hurt. With the help of his parents and his
teacher, Daniel is able to deal with his feelings of being angry, afraid, and sad. Talking about his feelings, feeling the
love and safety of his home, and finding ways to express his feelings constructively help him cope with the violent
incident. Despite the fact that the world is often unfair and cruel, Daniel learns from his parents, teachers and
neighbors ways to treat people with empathy, respect and compassion.
This book also includes a Note to Parents which gives parents tips on ways to be supportive and compassionate as
well as healing and life-enhancing when dealing with the cruelty and violence in our world today. As the author
states, "There is no way our children can be shielded from the existence of violence, but opening up a dialogue and
sensitively responding to their concerns does help." This book is meant to be read to and discussed with children in
the home or in the RE program after a violent event has occurred. Or it can be used in children's worship, family
worship and parent gatherings when grappling with the reality of living in a violent world. This book was published in
1994 by Morrow and Co. of New York City and is available for $15.00 from your local bookstore.
