Adult Enrichment Mission Statement
Linda Olsen Peebles, MRE

The Adult Education Program of the Mt. Vernon Church views learning as a lifelong process, and our mission is to provide courses to assist members and friends to develop their own intellectual and spiritual growth. As part of the Unitarian Universalist Association of North America, we are a non-creedal community and draw inspiration from a wide variety of religious and secular sources and from our own experience.

In this rapidly changing world, we note that our traditional, analytical way of thinking needs to be supplemented with a UU spirituality which speak to the quest for both knowledge and meaning of the world and of our daily lives.

Work of the Head
We are a community committed to a principled and responsible search for truth and meaning, guided by reason. ARE serves as a source for teaching and communicating concepts and ideas familiar and new as we embark on an intellectual journey through the universe of though in which we navigate. We seek and selectively use wisdom from our Judeo-Christian sources as well as from philosophies and religions of the East; from Native American and Old World earth-centered religions, as well as the findings of modern science.

Work of the Heart
We are a community committed to the acceptance of one another and encouragement of spiritual growth, recognition of the inherent worth of every person, and the goal of the world community. ARE serves as a vehicle of interpersonal bonding and sharing, recreation, and enjoyment, in recognition of emotional connection between one another and between one and all.

Work of the Hand
We are a community committed to justice in human relations, social change, and peace and liberty for all. ARE serves as a source of information and learning about global and local issues of topical moral concern. We seek to clarify issues of conscience and social concern in order to incarnate our theology of daily living.
