Religious Education Week – July 24-30, 2005
One of the most important things any religious community does is transmit
their tradition to the next generation. Through worship, through religious
education, and through our lived faith, we tell who we are, what we value,
and how we come together as a community of shared religious heritage and
values. Religious educators have long valued the use of stories in helping
to facilitate religious exploration for our children and youth. This conference
will affirm that usage but shift the focus toward how we pass our heritage
on to our young people that they might head out from our congregations
fully belonging to our larger religious community and guided by our principles
and purposes.
Come and join returning coordinators Wendy von Zirpolo, Jane Gabrielson,
and Mindy Whisenhunt; music director Laurie Loosigian; and a spectacular
programming staff. We are excited to announce the return of Rev. Rosemary
Bray McNatt as minister of the week. Rosemary serves as minister of Fourth
Church in New York and serves as a member of the UUA’s Trauma Response
Team. She is looking forward to her return and excited about unpacking
how we worship through stories.
Back again this year will be the multi-age children’s program,
early morning polar bear dips, an ice cream social, a parade and talent
show, afternoon conversations, evening fun, glitter toes, and a whole
lot more!
New this year:
- Two renaissance modules –UU History and Philosophy
- Week-long drumming
- Theology on the porch with Rev. Rosemary Bray McNatt
- Story telling workshops with Mindy Whisenhunt
- An invitation for college-age youth (18-24) who are not enrolled
in our Senior Youth Program to attend at a reduced rate in the “Grove
Campus.” An area of the Grove will be set aside for the campus
and welcome your tents. There will be a reduced fee that includes registration,
site fees, and meals.
As always, RE Week celebrates intergenerational community and the myriad
of possibilities it offers! Please do join us as we put our faith into
action – the very best way to tell our wonderful story!!!!
Family Matters! Weekend – August 26-28, 2005
Family Matters is a weekend conference for all families. During this action-packed
weekend, Ferry Beachers will be the first to experience workshops created
by the UUA Family Matters Task Force. Unitarian Universalists celebrate
many kinds of families and we invite you to come and experience this unique
weekend program with your family. We extend a special invitation to B/G/L/T
families, families of color, multicultural/multiracial families, trans-racial
adoptive families, and interfaith families. In intergenerational small
groups we will explore our multiple identities – individual, family,
cultural, and faith identities. We will create expressions of family,
play the Game of Family Life, and celebrate family stories as faith stories.
Leaders: Rev. Hope Johnson, DRUUMM family coordinator and parish
minister of the UU Congregation of Central Nassau in Garden City, New
York, and Rev. Keith Kron, co-chair of the UUA Family Matters Task Force
and Director of the UUA Office of Bisexual, Gay, Lesbian and Transgender
Concerns.
Conference Coordinator: Rev. Pat Hoertdoerfer, Director of UUA
Children, Family, and Intergenerational Programs.
Family Arts Week – August 28-September 2
This new conference will be a rare opportunity for families of all configurations
to explore the visual arts. This is a time for Ferry Beachers to enjoy
creating art together as families. Come to this intergenerational week
with your children, grandchildren, and nephews and nieces and immerse
yourself in photography, ceramics, or sketching and painting.
Award-winning photographers Harriet Sutherland and Dick Welch will return
to Ferry Beach with their popular photography workshop. Their workshop
includes instruction on both film cameras or digital cameras. Dick and
Harriet will lead the whole group on field trips to Biddeford Pool, early
morning at the Portland Head Light, Camp Ellis at dusk, and of course,
our own Ferry Beach sunrises. Children ten years and older, accompanied
by adult family members or adult friends, are welcome to register for
this workshop.
Anne Mann, veteran Ferry Beach conference coordinator and staffer, will
lead “family artists” in a ceramics workshop for all ages.
Anne has been working with clay – making ceramic jewelry and pottery
– for many years. Now she will bring her passion for ceramics and
her expertise to Ferry Beach for our week of creativity. The new Ferry
Beach kiln will be installed and ready for Family Arts creations.
The third Family Arts workshop will be sketching and painting. Families
attending this workshop will meet in Ferry Beach’s well-stocked
art room to learn the basics of sketching and painting. Then they will
head outdoors to practice, create, and enjoy the artist process.
Extensive artistic talent is not a requirement for this conference. If
you have ever wanted to find your artistic muse in a family setting, this
is your chance. In keeping with the spirit of the conference, all children
participating in the art workshops should be accompanied by an adult family
member or an adult friend. For families with younger children up to age
six, Ferry Beach’s Children’s Program will be in full swing.

Family Eco-Living Camp July – 2-8, 2005
Come to the first annual Family Eco-Living Camp. Together we will learn
how to live lightly on the earth, how to calculate our ecological footprint,
how to learn from nature, and how to bring our financial life into alignment
with our values of peace, sustainability, and respect for the earth and
all her resources. There will be activities for all ages with a focus
on an environmentally sound family life. We will learn how to reduce our
impact through practical and easy solutions to energy needs, transportation,
education for our kids, housing, and the never ending battle with stuff.

having a couple of weekends just for families to have quality time together?"

Western UU Life Festival (WUULF) at Ghost Ranch, New Mexico –
June 6-12, 2005
Two Paths: Shamanism or Building Your Own Theology
Ghost Ranch is a magical place and a week at our Western Unitarian Universalist
Life Festival can be a magical time. WUULF is a truly intergenerational
community that has come together at this location for more than thirty
years.
WUULF is an experience of renewal adventure; an opportunity to relax,
explore, hike, laugh, sing, and socialize; and a chance to greet old friends
and meet new ones, in a place where all are welcome. No two people who
come to WUULF choose the same path. One will hike while another walks
the labyrinth in silence. In recognition of our diversity, we have chosen
to offer two paths for our program workshops this year. Kathy Montan will
be returning to WUULF from upstate New York to help us delve deeper into
Shamanism, while Rev. Mike Morran, who served as our minister-in-residence
for the past four years, will return to facilitate a Building Your Own
Theology workshop. Whatever your choice, whatever your are looking for,
we hope that you will join us at Ghost Ranch this year to discover or
rediscover the magic of WUULF.
