A Covenant Is a Special Kind of Promise

Rev. Hope Johnson

What’s a promise?

What kinds of promises do we make to each other?

How do we feel when we keep our promises?

How do we feel when we don’t keep them?

A promise can be one-sided….

But some promises are at least two-sided.

Who’s ever been in a fight or an argument with someone?

Did you ever decide to call it quits? To make a truce?

Both sides have to decide to work things out.

That’s one kind of a two-sided promise.

Another is what we say to each other when we get married … .

Another is when we decide to work on a project together.

It could even be as simple as “If you promise to take care of a dog – feed her and walk her every day, then you can have one.”

Or even “If you do your homework, you can watch TV for an hour.”

The important thing is to only make promises that you know you will keep.

When you say, “I promise,” remember to keep it . . . .

You are not the only one who is counting on you.
