Arts In August In August we have done something for a few years called “Arts in August.” The great thing about this program is that it taps some of the people who would not normally be RE teachers, but who are willing to work with the kids and explain their special talent. The program has featured: A Painter: She outlined chalices on six canvases with masking tape. Then she described different painting techniques to the kids and they followed up by using each technique on the canvas (e.g. collage). One work looks like a watercolor, another like a Picasso. One has dribbles of paint spattered all over-but the effect is amazing! I'm not personally familiar with all of the "proper" techniques, but the kids had a blast, and our fellowship ended up with six framed pieces that now adorn our walls Actors: People with theater experience have done mini-workshops with the kids. Poets: Cinquans and Haikus?our resident poet helped teach the children how to create them! Weaving: We have a fabulous weaver at our church. She brought in her loom, and let the kids work it, then designed a way for them to weave a bookmark using cardboard and yarn. Music: The resident guitarist(s) will get them singing! They may learn some music basics or create a song together. Drumming: This has been approached in two different ways. One year, the kids made drums and then did lots of drumming. Another year, the guest artist brought in samples of types of drums, some from his band, and let the kids “play.” Creative Imagery and Art: Actually, our Minister conducted this session. She and the children had a discussion involving a meditation on messages we would give to people who needed a “lift.” The children then created a gorgeous supply of “cards of caring” to be mailed throughout the year. We have conducted this program for the past two summers with great success
for ages four and up (usually to about age eleven). We do advertise for
volunteers, and some come forward, but many need to be approached.
Rarely do I get a “no,” especially when I am clear with my
guidelines and expectations. |
