- Theme and Description
- Explores ways in which the UU Principles and Purposes are expressed and violated in our society. Using contemporary music as a focus, young people learn to incorporate and express UU values in their lives through two projectsÑa musical presentation and a congregational worship service. The first part of the curriculum focuses on the Principles, the second on the Sources of the living tradition.
- Goals for Participants
- To learn about the religious, social, and cultural movements from which Unitarian Universalism has evolved;
To identify women and men who have lived or are living UU values;
To become more discerning and critical of the culture in which they live;
To continue their development of a personal faith;
To have an exciting and enjoyable learning experience that they can share with their congregation.
- Age Range
- Ages 12-14
- Size of Group
- 8 to 14 ideal
- Space Requirements
- A comfortable room that is large enough to allow participants to divide into small groups
- Number and Length of Sessions
- 23 sessions
Length: 1 to 1 1/4 hours - Leader Training
- Leaders should be comfortable with young adolescents and familiar with their needs. Co-leadership is strongly recommended. No special training is required. Musical ability or expertise is not needed.
- Leader Preparation
- 1 to 1 1/2 hours per session
- Strengths
- Gives a strong grounding in UU values.
Requires minimal leader preparation.
Offers participants a chance to critically examine popular culture.
Includes activities that allow participants to share their learning with the congregation.
Engages youth through their own music.
Contains a worship component (closing circle). - Limitations
- Many sessions do not include physical activities, so leaders may need to add some.
Initial sessions offer little opportunity for participants to engage with their own music or culture. - Adaptability
- Part One (the Principles) and Part Two (the Sources) can be used independently as half-year curricula.
Some activities can be adapted for use with youth groups. - Unitarian Universalist Values
- #UU values are explored, with one session dedicated to each of the Principles and Purposes.
