Unitarian Universalism for Children Kindergarten to Grade 2

Theme and Description
Through this curriculum, 5 to 7 year olds become acquainted with their own Unitarian Universalist community: the people, buildings, rituals, and celebrations, and the basic tenets of Unitarian Universalism.
Goals for Participants
To understand each person's uniqueness and potential;
To become familiar with Unitarian Universalist rituals and traditions;
To become familiar with their congregation's history, lay and staff leaders, and building;
To learn how Unitarian Universalists celebrate holidays.

Age Range
Ages 5 to 7
Size of Group
6 to 12
Space Requirements
An average-sized room, with floor space for circle time and tables for crafts. Occasionally, outdoor space is also needed.
Number and Length of Sessions
32 sessions
Length: 75 to 90 minutes
Leader Training
Two leaders strongly recommended. The curriculum is self-explanatory; training desirable but not necessary.
Leader Preparation
1 to 2 hours per session

Strengths
Offers a wide range of activities that are both engaging and informative.
Presents inspiring group discussion topics.
Features sessions that can stand alone.
Lists all materials needed.
Provides a strong lead-in to A Stepping-Stone Year and Travel in Time.
Limitations
Requires leaders to choose among activities, since sessions exceed 1 hour.
Requires gathering many materials for each activity.
Adaptability
Some activities are appropriate for older children, intergenerational gatherings, and youth or adult worship services.
Unitarian Universalist Values
Includes Unitarian Universalist customs and rituals, such as the Dedication Service, Flower Communion, and Chalice Lighting. Implicitly affirms the inherent worth and dignity of every person as well as respect for diversity.
