Super Heroes
Bible People

By Gaia Brown

Theme and Description
This curriculum is a values-based curriculum for primary aged children using stories about people from the Jewish and Christian Bibles.
Goals for Participants
To introduce children to the stories of people in the Bible who acted with courage and wisdom in their attempts to lead their lives fully and make the world a better place;
To show how the lives of these people confirm the Principles of Unitarian Universalism;
To encourage children to lead their own lives fully and to use their own positive "superpowers" as they interact with the world around them to grow both spiritually and ethically.

Age Range
Ages 6-9
Size of Group
16-18
Space Requirements
A large room with a big, open floor space for dramatic re-inactments of the story and to accommodate multiple props.
Number and Length of Sessions
19 sessions
Length: 60 minutes
Leader Training
None required although it is recommended that at least one leader is comfortable leading the group in song or alternatively, a person could be recruited to help out on those morning which have musical activities.
Leader Preparation
1 hour

Strengths
Includes stories so there is no need for teachers to hunt down books;
Stories are interactive and designed to appeal to multiple intelligences;
Creates rich environment for learning and exploring with sessions which build on one another and props which expand the classroom environment;
God is not assigned a pronoun in any of the stories, allowing for gender-free concept of divinity;
A time for sharing as a group is built into each session;
Includes both a CD and sheet music for the original theme song which is used every week;
Closing time makes connections between the theme and one or more Unitarian Universalist Principles.
Limitations
Not a full year curriculum. Congregations may use the companion curriculum UU Super Heroes, available from the publisher.
In focusing on events and people of the Bible, the curriculum includes some violent content which may upset some children or their parents.
The richness of the curriculum depends on effective storytelling; if the stories are not presented in dramatic and interesting ways, the children's attention may be lost.
Because many of the lessons depend on earlier sessions, there is little flexibility in the order of sessions.
Adaptability
Adaptable to accommodate slightly older children.
Unitarian Universalist Values
Each session makes a connection to a Unitarian Universalist Principle. Many of the stories focus on the idea of treating others fairly or how everyone is important. A sharing circle and closing time with chalice lighting relates specifically to our UU faith.
