Building Your Spiritual Home

Theme and Description
Enables young adults to explore and discuss the unique and ongoing transitions of their life stage. Focuses on spirituality and community.
Goals for Participants
To build a spiritual home within the self
To learn to carry their home with them wherever they go
To explore the concept of community
To create a working metaphor for home
To learn to slow down

Age Range
18-35
Size of Group
Ideally 5-15
Space Requirements
A good sized room with the possibility of breakout rooms. Access to a kitchen or other food space is necessary for the kick-off retreat.
Number and Length of Sessions
Kick-off retreat: 6 to 8 hours with a meal at the end
Length: Plus 7 sessions of 2 to 2 1/2 hours
Leader Training
No formal training necessary. The program is best served by co-leaders with an understanding of facilitation and group process.
Leader Preparation
Co-leaders should read and discuss the curriculum ahead of time and plan together for the sessions. Estimated 20 to 30 minutes for each session.

Strengths
Facilitates community building with a focus outreach and support networks.
Curriculum itself is clear, concise, and easy to use.
Each session complements group activities with time for personal reflection and writing.
Employs different modes of learning, including linguistic, visual, and kinesthetic.
Limitations
Some information is outdated, but this is easily corrected through advance preparation.
Adaptability
Easy to re-order or omit sessions. Can work successfully with various group sizes. Not ncessarily adaptable to other age groups.
Unitarian Universalist Values
Includes and incorporates Unitarian Universalist values throughout: service to others, interconnectedness, respect, and the “free and responsible search for truth and meaning.” Incorporates Unitarian Universalist ritual, readings, and songs. Each session includes a “Unitarian Universalist Connection” that attends to how the session’s material fits with the Unitarian Universalist journey.
