How to make the text on your computer easier to read

With thanks to www.seniornet.org External Site

Browser Font Options

With Netscape Navigator 3.x

Click on "Options," "General Preferences" and "Fonts." Clicking on either of the small arrows following "Use the Proportional Font" will open a scrolling list of the fonts on your computer system. Click on the font you prefer. Next, click on either of the small arrows following "Size" and on the size you prefer in the list that opens. Clicking on "Apply" will change the look of whatever page you have open in the background so that can see the effect. If it is what you want, make the same kind of choices in the "Fixed Font" area and then click on "OK" and your choices will be saved.

With Netscape Communicator

Click on "Edit" and "Preferences," "Appearance," then on the tab for "Fonts." Clicking on the small arrow following "Font Style" will open a scrolling list of the fonts on your system. Click on the font you prefer. Next, click on the small arrow following "Font Size" and choose the size you want to use. Then, to be sure that everything you see posted will be in that style and size, click in the small circle next to "Use My Default Fonts, overriding document-specified fonts."

With Netscape Communicator you can also change the size of the fonts by clicking on "View" and "Increase Font" or "Decrease Font."

With Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.x

Click on "View," "Options" and "Font Settings" for font styles and choose the font you prefer. Click on "View," "Fonts" and your choice of "Largest," "Larger," "Medium," "Small" or "Smallest."

With Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0

Click on "Edit" and "Preferences." Make sure the arrow to the left of "Web Browser" is pointing down, then click on "Browser Display." Next to "Text Size" click on either of the small arrows and then on the adjustment you prefer. To choose the type style you prefer, click on "Language/Fonts." Choose the "Proportional Font" and "Fixed-width Font" by clicking on the small arrows to the right of each one. When you are satisfied with your choices, click on "OK" to save them.

With Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher

You can adjust the size of the font you see: Click the View menu. Point to Text Size to open a list of choices. Click the size you want.

Mouse Scroll Wheel

This is a quick way to change the size of pages and quickly reverse the change. If you have a scroll wheel on your mouse you can increase and decrease the size of the font on a page. Press and hold down the keyboard key marked Ctrl (lower left) while moving the scroll wheel on the mouse. Moving the scroll wheel in one direction will increase the font size; move in the reverse direction to decrease the font size.

Browser Accessibility Setting to Ignore Web Page Styles and Fonts

You can override the font size that the Web page sets and use whatever font size you've chosen as the default on the View, Text Size menu and/or the Font that you've chosen in the Font Options in your browser.

  1. In Internet Explorer: Click: Tools, Options, General.
  2. Click the Accessibility button.
  3. Click the check box next to Ignore Font Sizes Specified on Web pages and/or the check box next to Ignore Font Styles Specified on Web pages.
  4. Click OK on each window to close it.
