There is one that believes religion should be more than a narrow statement of faith - that it should have room for deep questions that might have more than one answer; and that the mystery of creation can be acknowledged without having to be named.

Through the ages, there have always been people who have taken a progressive view of religion with the belief that people can be sensitive to the sacred—and intellectually truthful at the same time. Unitarian Universalist congregations in the greater Houston area invite those who share that vision to visit one of our eight congregations.

Our slogan is “The Uncommon Denomination”. Here are some ways that our faith is uncommon:

  • Members are encouraged to define their own religious beliefs rather than being asked to adhere to a single uniform creed.
  • We claim no one text as our religious authority. We are as likely to refer on Sunday morning to the words of Henry David Thoreau or Ralph Waldo Emerson, feminist theologians or Native American authors, as we are to the Bible, which we look to for the wisdom of both Jewish and Christian traditions. We believe that religious truth comes from not one but many sources.
  • We have a strong commitment to the inherent worth and dignity of all people. We embrace diversity. Gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender persons are welcomed. Many interfaith couples find Unitarian Universalist congregations a place where both can be comfortable.
