A message from the Rev. William G. Sinkford,
President of the Unitarian Universalist Association,
for young people:
October 2004
I would like to share a word with you, our young people, during this election
season:
As you probably know, people in our congregations don’t all
share the same political beliefs.
But our faith is not weakened by such differences of opinion.
Rather, we grow stronger as we listen to each other with care.
Disagreeing is hard, painful for everyone.
But we are still Unitarian Universalists together.
Whomever your parents vote for,
However your family understands the events of the world,
Whatever your yard signs and bumper stickers say,
You belong here.
Claim your own opinions, speak the truths you know,
But always leave room in your mind and your heart, to learn
How things look from other points of view.
May we always stand on the side of love,
Listening with respect to those we disagree with,
May we stand on the side of love,
Remembering we are bound to one another in humanity,
Working for a time when peace, liberty and justice
Are known by all the people in our country and our world.
My very best wishes to you and your families in these days and in the months ahead.
