Statement by UUA President William G. Sinkford
Win Without War Vigil
Lincoln Memorial, Washington D.C.
March 16, 2003
My name is William Sinkford, and I speak to you tonight as both the president of the Unitarian Universalist Association and as the proud father of a young man serving America as a member of the 82nd Airborne Division of the United States Army.
Unitarian Universalists are called by our faith to stand together with our sisters and brothers of other faiths and other lands to speak out for peace. As religious people, we recognize that all humanity shares a single destiny on this fragile planet that is our home.
As the parent of a soldier, I say that the best way to support our troops is to say no to this unnecessary war. We Americans must honor the covenant we have made with the brave men and women in the armed services who are willing to shed their blood in defense of our country. That covenant affirms that we will ask them to put their lives in harm's way only when it is absolutely necessary. Military action must always be the last resort. Now is not the time, and Iraq is not the place, to ask for this sacrifice of blood.
As a Unitarian Universalist, as an American, and as a father, I call upon our government to let the U.N. inspections continue. We can support our troops by working for peace. We can spare the lives of innocent Iraqis. We can win without war.

President, Unitarian Universalist Association
