UUA President William G. Sinkford: Ramadan and the Quest for Peace
November 16, 2002
Dear Fellow Unitarian Universalists:
As the holy month of Ramadan
enters its second week, Muslims around the world continue to observe
a sacred fast from dawn until sunset each day. The difficulties faced
by our Muslim sisters and brothers during the past year have prompted
some Unitarian Universalists to seek ways to show their solidarity.
A number of my colleagues at the Unitarian Universalist Association
have decided to come together to share in a symbolic observance of Ramadan,
with each person choosing one day of the month in which to fast for
the cause of peace. I will be joining their efforts and I invite you
to consider whether this might also be an appropriate expression of
your own spiritual principles. During these uncertain times, I pray
that this period of abstinence and reflection will remind the world
community of the preciousness of peace.
In faith,
