United States Conference of Religions For Peace (WCRP/USA)
Reorganizes; Issues Major Statement On Social ResponsibilityThe United States Conference of Religions for Peace (WCRP/USA), with the assistance of its Secretary General, Mr. Antonios Kireopoulos, has re-structured itself to include a Presidents Council composed of the senior leaders of many American religious communities; an Executive Council composed of national religious figures with portfolios or responsibilities related to the mission of WCRP; and an Advisory Council of outstanding religious persons committed to the mission of WCRP. In addition, plans are underway to provide for local municipal multireligious groups to affiliate as Units of the Chapter, even as projects are proceeding locally across the country.
To provide a framework for its action programs, the Council of Presidents of WCRP issued a major statement on "Diversity and Community: Social Responsibility in the Context of Ethnic, Cultural, Racial and Religious Diversity in the United States." The National Council of Churches in the United States has already taken up this Statement as a reflection paper for its General Assembly, and other religious communities are distributing it through their own networks. The USA Chapter is taking steps to present the Statement to President George W. Bush. In this way, WCRP/USA seeks to bring the contributions of religious communities into the national debate on this issue.
