The Dallas Morning News
Letters to the Editor

August 15, 1999

Congratulations on your stand

I congratulate you on the editorial "Scout Policy - Court makes ban on gays hard to defend," Aug. 7, and remind you that the discriminatory policies of the Boy Scouts extend to religion as well. The Boy Scouts has gone so far as to withdraw recognition of the religious awards given to Unitarian Universalist Scouts because we have challenged them. Religious people should join with your editorial board in calling upon the Boy Scouts to do what other youth organizations do: screen volunteers and have behavioral norms for participants, but without bias and generalization. To do otherwise is to do a disservice to their role as a civic organization preparing young men for citizenship in a pluralistic society.

JOHN BUEHRENS, President, Unitarian Universalist Association, Boston, Mass.
