Prayer for Interfaith Vigil,
Marblehead, MA, 9/11/01
Interim Assistant Minister Kathy Reis
Unitarian Universalist Church of Marblehead, MA My friends, we have come together at the end of this terrible day to stand vigil, to keep watch. Let us call to mind those for whom we keep watch.Spirit of Life,
we honor the light.
We light these candles for our families, our beloveds,
our friends, for all our relations.
For those who are near and for those from whom
we feel an unwanted distance.
For the dead, whose complex and luminous lives
ended so fearsomely today.
For those who mourn tonight.
For those who this night lie in hospitals,
wounded and afraid.
For those known and unknown to us
who tonight live with terrifying uncertainty.
For our children who inherit this world.
And for ourselves.
Spirit of Life and Light,
May we find solace in this blessed gathering.
May the light of these candles inspire us to use all our powers
to heal and not to harm, to bless and not to curse.
May their radiance pour out upon our hearts,
and spread light into this darkened world.
