UU Service Committee to Coordinate UU Aid for Disaster Relief Efforts

September 13, 2001
To All Unitarian Universalist Congregations:

The devastating acts of terrorism against the United States this week have caused unprecedented human loss and suffering in New York City, Washington, D.C., Pennsylvania and elsewhere in our country. We at the Unitarian Universalist Association and the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee are deeply shocked and saddened by the enormity of this national tragedy. Our hearts and prayers go out to the innocent victims of these attacks and their families.

Unitarian Universalists are responding to this massive disaster in several ways, and many have asked both the UUSC and the UUA how they can contribute financially to the relief effort. We ask that you take a special Sunday collection for the joint UUSC/UUA "September 11th Humanitarian Relief Fund," and also to encourage congregation members to contribute individually. All donations should be sent to:

September 11th Humanitarian Relief Fund
Unitarian Universalist Service Committee
PO Box 845259
Boston, MA 02284-5259.

Consistent with our UU principles and the missions of the UUA and UUSC, all donations will be used in collaboration with colleague agencies in the disaster areas that are focusing on humanitarian relief and follow-up human rights programs for the families of victims of the disaster.

Unitarian Universalist congregations and individual UUs may well elect to contribute directly to relief funds of their choosing, but for those who are looking to contribute through the UUA and the UUSC, we offer the above suggestion.

William Sinkford
President, UUA

Valora Washington
Executive Director, UUSC
