Statement by the Board of Trustees of the Unitarian Universalist Association Regarding Events of September 11, 2001 (Boston, MA - Oct. 24, 2001) In the aftermath of the events of September 11, 2001, the UUA Board of Trustees joins our President William G. Sinkford in expressing deep gratitude for the work of our congregations, their leaders, and the UUA staff in providing compassionate care and comfort as well as opportunities for thoughtful dialogue and positive action to those who have suffered, directly and indirectly. We share the concerns that President Sinkford expressed in his pastoral letter of October 11. We, too, believe that “the justice we should seek is restoration, not retribution” and that we should work for restoration that can break the cycle of violence and inequity that has victimized people for generations. In the spirit of the Rev. Sinkford's letter, we reaffirm our UU principles and pertinent resolutions of our General Assemblies , and invite all UU congregations and individuals to join us in reaffirming our longstanding commitments to promote alternatives to violence and work for peace, to alleviate poverty and suffering, and to defend human rights and civil liberties for all people.
