Here we have gathered; gathered to worship together, to celebrate, to mark the turning of the seasons.
We gather knowing that while we are in this place, many have no place to go.
We give thanks, aware that for some, all worldly goods and even loved ones have been lost.
We celebrate, and yet we yearn for peace and comfort for those whose lives have been torn apart by suffering in the wake of this country's greatest natural disaster.
This is a time for generosity, for an outpouring of compassion that will build like a mighty stream, carrying love and support to those who need it most.
Today's offering will go in its entirety to the UUA-UUSC Gulf Coast relief fund, and will be used both to provide general community assistance and to help our UU congregations and their ministries during these horrible days in the storm's aftermath.
On this day, I urge you to reconsider that which you were going to put in the collection plate and instead to take out your checkbook. I ask you to double, triple or quadruple that which you might have been thinking of contributing and instead, to dig deep, motivated by love and generosity. It is this spirit and our love which will help our sisters and brothers in the Gulf Coast region.
So let us offer as much financially as we can. And as we offer up our material gifts, let us also hold these dear people- so in need of our care - in our hearts and our prayers.
The Rev. William G. Sinkford
