Faith in the Face of Disaster: UU Response to Hurricane Katrina
Statement from the General Assembly of Unitarian and Free Christian Churches, United Kingdom
September 29, 2005
Dear William,
British Unitarians have viewed the events surrounding the hurricanes Katrina and Rita with great concern. Television coverage by the BBC has brought the full picture of human misery to our attention. Your message of 6th September has been widely circulated and is a major feature of our denominational newspaper "The Inquirer" of 24th September. This provides us with a pathway for active response.
The British General Assembly has allocated $1,000 to the Gulf Coast Relief Fund and the London and Provincial District is joining us with a further $500. Additionally, we are urging our members to donate online directly to the Gulf Coast Relief Fund. I am sure that many will do so.
We are inspired by the spontaneous activities being undertaken by UUA congregations within and adjacent to the stricken areas. This is the true meaning of community. We send them our love and our admiration, as well as our financial contribution.
Yours in fellowship,
Jeffrey J Teagle General Secretary
