UUs Work to Support the Democratic Process

As election day draws near, UUs across the United Sates are working together to
register voters, safeguard the election process, and monitor election results
in key battleground states. In Philadelphia, the Rev. Rosemary Bray McNatt, minister
of the Fourth Universalist Society
in New York City, is working with a number of ministerial colleagues and congregants
and is deeply engaged in this work. She writes in her blog, “Nearly everyone
I know has been worried about the potential for voter fraud, obstruction and general
shenanigans. But a lot of Unitarian Universalists—lay and ordained—wanted
to do more than worry. So I decided a few months back to join up with one of the
many non-partisan groups organizing to ensure a fair election this November.
“Along with several of my colleagues, I chose to work with the Election
Protection Project, which has been working almost four years now on assembling
a network of volunteers in every state that had evidence of voting irregularities
in the last election. For months now, they've done in-person and conference
call trainings for those of us who want to be part of their work in the last
72 to 96 hours before Nov. 2.
“Because I'm a New Yorker, the closest targeted state is Pennsylvania,
and so I've been assigned to Philadelphia, one of my favorite cities. ..It feels
good and vital and very Unitarian Universalist to do this kind of work to ensure
democratic elections in the United States. It also feels sad that, this late
in the day, many of us still worry about genuine democratic process in our own
country. But I'm especially proud to be doing this work as a religious leader;
EP put out a specific call for clergy to become part of this effort, thanks
to our skills in conflict management and community engagement.”
