Reflections on Same Sex Weddings in San Francisco
By The Rev. John Marsh, co-minister, First Unitarian Universalisty
Society of San Francisco, CA
At 1:00 PM Pacific Time on February 14, 2004, Trista Petra Emmer
and Kristin Allison Midyett (of Salt Lake City, Utah, and friends
of the South Vally U.U. Society) were married by me, having been
issued a license to marry on February 13 by county clerk Darryl
M. Burton of San Francisco.
The following morning, my colleague, the Rev. Margot Campbell Gross,
co-minister of the San Francisco Church, who had pledged that she
would not sign any marriage licenses until she could do so without
discriminating against same sex couples, co-officiated with me at
the marriage of San Francisco church members Denis Paul and Seph
Caron. Following the service, as the two became Denis Letourneau
Paul and Seph Caron Paul, Rev. Campbell Gross signed their marriage
license. This was the first marriage license she had signed in seven
years.
There have been some clergy available at San Francisco City Hall
to give their blessing and signature to any who asked. There were
also members of the San Francisco UU church who had already had
their marriages recognized by the church in a religious ceremony,
and who went to City Hall to have their marriages legally recognized.
These couples included Don Williams and David Jones, and Bruce Deming
and Jeff Byrne.
These are heady times.
