Message on Indian Ocean Tsunami

Ciudad de la Habana, Cuba, 1 de enero de 2005.
A: Toda La Comunidad Internacional de los UUs.
Queridos hermanos, hemos estado al tanto de los últimos partes informativos
ofrecidos por nuestro Periódico: Granma y ahora también, por
las notas informativas brindadas por los hermanos (as): Mary Bennett, Ivanka
Fiserová, etc. referente a la situación actual por la que atraviesan
los sobrevivientes del desastre por el Terremoto en Asia y que convergió
en el Océano Indico y se extendió hasta el Oriente Africano:
Tsunami.
Como UUC nos sumamos a la cadena de dolor, de oración por los sobrevivientes
y aunque nuestro pueblo cubano carente de recursos financieros para ofrecer
en solidaridad. Nos sentimos orgullosos y hasta dichosos de poder saber que
desde el primer momento nuestro gobierno cubano se ofreció para brindar
ayuda médica y todo lo referente a esta; además, estuvo entre
los primeros países en lanzar un llamado a la Comunidad Internacional
para que acorten el tiempo, en ofrecer sus ayudad humanitarias: alimentos,
medicamentos, artículos de primera necesidad y ayudas financieras para
los países afectados.
Nosotros cómo UUC y miembro activos de la Comunidad Internacional de
los UUs, no deseamos ni pretendemos quedarnos en silencio, porque comprendemos
y sentimos el profundo dolor de todos aquellos que en esta hora han perdido
no sólo sus bienes materiales, casas; sino que han dejado de compartir
sus penas y alegrías, con los seres queridos más allegados:
Sus padres, hijos (as), esposos (as), abuelos (as) y vecinos (as) o amigos
(as). Lamentamos con profundo pesar desde los más hondo de nuestros
ser, la tragedia acaecida por la que han atravesado y continúan atravesando
y estaremos el día 2 de enero dedicando 1 minuto de silencio además
de encender un "Cáliz" en Honor de las victimas.
No deseo terminar estas líneas, sin antes dar las Gracias, a cada persona
y Comunidad UUs de cada país; que se ha sumado de una u otra manera
al llamado solidario.
En Paz, Amor y Espíritu Solidario, me despido y agradezco a cada uno
por su amistad.

To the whole Unitarian Universalist community,
Dear brothers and sisters, we have been reading the news articles published
in [the Cuban official newspaper] Granma, as well as the notes sent by our
sisters Mary Bennett [from the CUC], Iva Fiserova, etc. regarding the current
situation of the survivors of the earthquake disaster in Asia, converging
on the Indian Ocean and extending as a "tsunami" even to the East
coast of Africa.
As the Unitarian and Universalist Church of Cuba (UUC), we join in the chain
of grief and prayers for the survivors, and even though our Cuban people lacks
financial resources to give in solidarity, we are proud and even joyful to
know that, from the very first moment, our government offered medical help
and everything related to it; it was also among the first countries to call
the international community to shorten the time to send their humanitarian
aid: food, prescription drugs, essential items and financial help for the
affected countries.
As the Unitarian and Universalist Church of Cuba and active members of the
UU international community, we do not wish nor have the intention of remaining
in silence, because we understand and feel the deep pain felt by all those
who have lost, not just their material belongings and homes, but they also
can no longer share their griefs and joys with their beloved ones: their parents,
children, spouses, grandparents, neighbors or friends. We deeply mourn, from
the bottom of our hearts, the tragedy that has afflicted and is still afflicting
them, and on January 2nd we will dedicate a minute of silence and light our
chalice in remembrance of the victims.
We do not wish to end this note without giving thanks to every UU person
and every UU community of all countries who have joined this call to solidarity
in one way or another.
