The Spanish-speaking Unitarian Universalist community wants to join in the
manifestations of grief, shock and solidarity in relation to the fatal "tsunami"
that has affected milions of people along the coasts of southern Asia.
The latest calculations rise the number of victims over 150,000 and there are
millions who have lost their homes, belongings, and means of life.
We are also saddened by the tragic news coming from Argentina, where a terrible
fire has caused almost 200 dead.
Three Indian Unitarians who were in the south of India to receive medical treatment,
are counted among the fatal victims of the waves. Thanks to the secretariat
of the International Council (ICUU), which has immediately established contact
with our brothers and sisters living in the affected areas, we know that other
Indian Unitarian communities, due to their location in the interior or in other
areas of the country, have not been directly affected. Likewise, the Jemaat
Global Allah church of Indonesia, which is sympathetic to Unitarianism, has
been saved because it is located in the island of Java, far from the effects
of the tsunami. Unfortunately we still have no data about the Unitarian communities
in Sri Lanka and we are anxiously waiting for positive news from that island.
The Unitarian Service Committee in Canada (USC Canada) is accepting contributions
that will be used to send help to the Satunama and Yappika areas, where they
were already working on a regular basis with local associations in projects
of solidarity. You may send donations through their website at http://www.usc-canada.org/
.
The President of the Unitarian Universalist Association, Rev. Bill Sinkford,
has also expressed his grief for the tragic news. The UUA will keep a close
collaboration with the UU Service Committee to send help to the area. The UUSC
website is found at http://www.uusc.org
