News from Hurricane-Ravaged Florida
To:
UU Congregations in the Florida District
From: Bill Sinkford
September 10, 2004
This Sunday, for most of you, is the start of the church year. It is the time
to renew your covenants and recommit yourselves to your mission. But I know
that you have been living out your mission, in ways I can't imagine, in these
last weeks. You have been helping one another in the midst of crisis and, beyond
that, helping your communities live through two hurricanes and their aftermath.
You must be exhausted, physically and emotionally. For those not directly impacted,
the anxiety alone must be taking its toll. I hope this Sunday brings you all
some spiritual strength.
I have been gratified at the response of Unitarian Universalism to your struggles.
Money has poured in, not just for our churches, but also for the farm worker
community which has been hard hit. Prayers have been constant. Members of the
UU Trauma Response Team have been, and will be, with you. We all hold you in
our hearts.
On this Sunday, as you prepare for yet another hurricane, know that your religious
community stands with you, even through the dark and the rain and the wind.
I often say that the purpose of church on Sunday is to help us get through the
week. May that be so especially in this week.
Blessings,

Bill Sinkford
