Prayer for Reproductive Rights Gathering
All Souls Church – Washington DC
The Rev. Robert Finkelstein
Saturday April 24th, 2004
We gather this evening as people of faith, to advocate together an issue that tests all faiths – the issue of reproductive choice. Let us begin by invoking – prayerfully - the spiritual tools necessary for this endeavor:
First, we invoke the spirit of compassion – compassion that comes from knowing that each of us has, or will someday, find ourselves in a dilemma where we will have to make a decision in necessity and in sorrow;
Second, we invoke the spirit of broad-minded tolerance – the ability to recognize that truth and righteousness come in many forms, and that we are searching not for THE ANSWER, but for common ground;
Third, we invoke the spirit of courage – the courage to acknowledge moral ambiguity, and to resist the temptation to paint the world in sharp contrasts when we know in our hearts that it is more truly rendered in shades of gray.
Strengthened and sustained by our faith, and by our relationship with the Spirit of Life and Love, let our advocacy and our witness reflect our reverence for human life, for human relationships, for human covenant, and for human community.
Amen.
