March 25, 2003 - "A Fair Payment for War" by William H. Gates, Sr. and Chuck Collins, The Washington Post
- On Thursday, November 20, Michael Tino, Director of Young Adult Ministries, Marjorie Matty from our International Office, and I met with representatives of Japanese groups who work with young adults, groups with whom the UUA has longstanding relationships. They were visiting this country on a heartfelt mission: to deliver a message about their wish for peace to President Bush. Knowing that their letter was unlikely to make a dent on the White House at this particular time, we offered to share it with our own members in the spirit of interfaith cooperation.

Executive Vice President
Statement from Denise T. Davidoff, Chair, Board of Directors, The Interfaith Alliance Foundation (former Moderator, UUA)
(March 20, 2003) For me, the most tragic dissonance is
announcing our intent to rain 3000 bombs on the innocent children of Baghdad.
How can we think of that as "strategic" or "necessary" or "justifiable" when
what it is in reality is brutality, murder, indiscriminate slaughter? And
will we expect those children to respect us after we have maimed them physically
and emotionally? I keep thinking about my own sweet and innocent grandchildren.
Are they any more deserving of compassion than the children of Baghdad? Can't
we see the face of God in all children? We have gone mad!
