Position of the Unitarian Universalist Association
on possible War with Iraq
The Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations is opposed
to pre-emptive military action against Iraq that is done without
the approval of the United Nations. This position is based on numerous
statements approved by the General Assembly, the highest policy-making
body of the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations,
which support the United Nations as the appropriate body through
which international conflicts are to be resolved. This position
dates back to the very first General Assembly in 1961, which in
a resolution titled Disarmament and Test Ban Treaty
stated:
the settlement of international conflicts by war
is inconsistent with our commitments under the charter of the
United Nations and the prolongation of present tensions threatens
mankind with annihilation
