Liturgical Elements, UU Perspectives: The War in Iraq

Prayer

Invocation

Prayer Breakfast - Indian Head Division of the Naval Surface Warfare Center
Chaplain Cynthia Kane
March 20, 2003

Let us pray:

God known by many names, yet the same in each of our hearts, we offer this prayer of gratitude for your presence here at our National Prayer Breakfast. As a nation, and for us here at Indian Head— a tiny molecule of your vast creation— enrich and bless our meeting of minds and hearts this morning.

As we gather to celebrate the spiritual dimension of our nation’s heritage, we are grateful for this land where we are free to worship and pray in an amazing fabric of churches, synagogues, temples and mosques.

So too we are grateful for those who faithfully have served this nation during our brief 227 year existence, and for those who have given their lives defending the great principles upon which our country is founded:

We pray for our international, our national, and our local leaders. Please be with our Commander-in-Chief, our military and political leaders, and our allies as they work together to bring peace our nation and our world.

We pray for those who lead us on this base and all to whom the task of supervision is delegated, as we serve our nation and its ideals by keeping our Navy #1 in the world, now and in the future.

We pray for our men and women in uniform who are actively serving our country and its ideals, especially for those who are currently serving in harm’s way. We are grateful to them and their families for their contributions, and pray for them inner peace, as they defend the ideal of peace, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

May we be faithful caretakers in all aspects of our lives. And in the days ahead, we pray for wisdom to work with our international neighbors in the pursuit of security and peace, so that all people may know justice, love, mercy, and walk humbly with you.

Bless this food to our use and us to the service of others.

This we humbly pray— Amen.
