PSW District Aid Fund stands at $3,000; Fires Abate But Need for
Aid Continues
(November 3, 2003 - 11:00 AM EST) As rain and cooler temperatures
continue to aid firefighters in California, the series of wildfires
which have ravaged areas from San Bernardino to San Diego are approaching
containment. Residents are being allowed back into areas evacuated
last week to see whether their homes and businesses remain, and
schools are re-opening throughout the affected areas.
Current information indicates that deBenneville
Pines ,
the UU Camp/Conference Center located in the San Bernardino National
Forest, remains intact although it was evacuated when the fires
began. A number of Unitarian Universalist congregations have been
deeply affected by the fires, most notably the San Diego cluster
of congregations. Several congregation members have lost their homes;
other members have found that while their homes still stand, those
of their neighbors burned to the ground.
To meet the needs of the communities in which these Unitarian Universalist
congregations are located and in which their members live and work,
the Pacific Southwest District of the UUA continues to seek donations
to its fire relief fund. The fund, according to District Executive
Rev. Ken Brown,
will provide much-needed aid "to affected congregations, their
members, and communities." Additional funds will be channeled
through local aid agencies. To date, the fund has raised over $3,000.
